What is a fertilizer calculator?
A fertilizer calculator tells you how much product to spread over a lawn or garden bed to deliver a chosen amount of nitrogen. Fertilizer is not sold by the amount of nutrient it contains — it is sold as a blend, and only a fraction of the bag is actual nitrogen. The calculator bridges the gap between the rate you want to apply (a weight of nitrogen per unit of ground) and the weight of product you actually have to spread, using the nitrogen percentage printed on the bag.
Get the amount wrong and the lawn tells you: too little and the grass stays pale and thin, too much and you scorch the blades and flush excess nitrogen into groundwater and storm drains. Applying a measured rate is both cheaper and kinder to the lawn than eyeballing it.
How does the calculator work?
Enter the length and width of the area — each has its own unit selector, so you can measure in feet, yards, meters, centimeters or inches — then the target nitrogen rate and the fertilizer’s nitrogen content. The calculator computes the area, works out how much nitrogen that area calls for, divides by the analysis to convert nitrogen into product, and shows two results:
- Total area, switchable between ft², yd², m², acres and hectares.
- Fertilizer needed, switchable between lb, kg, oz and g.
The target nitrogen rate is given in pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 ft² — the unit every extension bulletin and bag label uses. 1 lb N per 1,000 ft² is the standard single application for established turf. The nitrogen content is the first of the three N-P-K numbers on the label: a 10-10-10 fertilizer is 10% nitrogen, a 46-0-0 urea is 46% nitrogen.
For an L-shaped lawn or a set of separate beds, run each rectangle through the calculator and add the product weights together.
Understanding the N-P-K label
Every fertilizer bag carries three numbers, such as 10-10-10 or 24-0-4. They are the guaranteed analysis — the percentage by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphorus expressed as P₂O₅, and potassium expressed as K₂O, in that fixed order. Only the first number matters for this calculation, because lawn feeding is driven by nitrogen.
A higher first number means a more concentrated fertilizer, so you spread less product to hit the same nitrogen rate. A 46-0-0 urea delivers the same nitrogen as a 10-10-10 blend with less than a quarter of the bag weight — which is exactly why the analysis has to be part of the sum.

The nitrogen the area needs is its size in thousands of square feet times the target rate (lb of N per 1,000 ft²). Dividing that by the nitrogen fraction of the product — the analysis as a percentage — converts nitrogen into the weight of product :

Worked examples
Example 1: a standard feed with a balanced fertilizer
A lawn is 50 ft long and 40 ft wide, you want the standard 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 ft², and you are using a 10-10-10 fertilizer (10% N):
So the lawn needs 20 lb of the 10-10-10 fertilizer — about 9.072 kg — to deliver 2 lb of actual nitrogen across the 2,000 ft².
Example 2: a lighter rate with a stronger fertilizer
The same 2,000 ft² lawn, but a gentler half-rate of 0.5 lb N per 1,000 ft² using a more concentrated 20% nitrogen product:
That is just 5 lb of product (about 2.268 kg). Halving the rate and doubling the analysis each cut the amount in half, so the answer is a quarter of the first example.
Practical notes
- Measure the grass, not the plot. Subtract the house, the driveway, the patio and the beds. Fertilizing a measured lawn area rather than the whole property is often the difference between one bag and two. The grass seed calculator, the sod calculator, the soil calculator and the mulch calculator take the same length and width.
- 1 lb of N per 1,000 ft² is the usual dose. Most cool-season lawns want 2–4 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 ft² across a whole growing season, split into several feeds of about 1 lb each. Never apply much more than 1 lb of quick-release nitrogen in a single pass.
- Read the first N-P-K number off the bag. It is a percentage, so a 46-0-0 urea is 46% nitrogen and a 5-10-5 starter is 5% nitrogen. Slow-release blends often carry a lower first number but feed for longer.
- Water it in, but not off. A light watering after spreading moves the granules off the blades and into the soil. A downpour, by contrast, washes fertilizer straight into the storm drain, so hold off if heavy rain is forecast.
- Calibrate the spreader. The calculator gives you the total weight; your spreader setting controls how evenly it goes down. Weigh out the amount for a known strip and check the coverage before committing to the whole lawn.
