What is a pipe volume calculator?
A pipe volume calculator works out how much liquid the inside of a cylindrical pipe can hold. This is handy when filling or draining plumbing runs, sizing irrigation lines, estimating how much water a heating loop contains, or calculating chemical doses for a pipeline. The result is reported in liters based on the pipe’s inner diameter and its length.
Formula
A pipe is a cylinder, so its internal volume is the area of the circular cross-section multiplied by the length. With inner diameter (in centimeters) and length (in meters), first convert the diameter to meters and halve it to get the radius:
This gives the volume in cubic meters. To express it in liters, multiply by 1000, since :
How to use
- Enter the inner diameter of the pipe in centimeters (measure the inside, not the outside, since the wall thickness does not hold fluid).
- Enter the length of the pipe run in meters.
- Read the pipe volume in liters. The result updates automatically once both fields are filled.
Worked example
Suppose a pipe has an inner diameter of 10 cm and a length of 2 m. Convert the diameter to meters and find the radius:
Then compute the volume in cubic meters and convert to liters:
So this pipe holds about 15.708 liters of fluid.
FAQ
Should I use the inner or outer diameter?
Always use the inner diameter. Only the hollow space inside the pipe holds fluid, so the wall thickness must be excluded. If you only know the outer diameter, subtract twice the wall thickness to get the inner diameter.
How do I convert the result to gallons?
One US gallon is about 3.785 liters, so divide the liter result by 3.785. In the worked example, 15.708 L is roughly 4.15 US gallons.
