What is a square yards calculator?

A square yards calculator finds the area of a rectangular surface and reports it in square yards (yd²). You enter a length and a width, and the calculator multiplies them to get the area. Each side can use its own unit — yards, feet, inches, metres, centimetres, or millimetres — and the result is converted to square yards automatically.

The square yard is a common unit for measuring flooring, carpet, turf, paving, concrete, and landscaping projects, especially in the United States and other regions that use imperial units. Knowing the area in square yards makes it easy to order the right amount of material and to estimate the project cost.

How does the calculator work?

The area of a rectangle is simply its length multiplied by its width:

A=a×bA = a \times b

where AA is the area, aa is the length, and bb is the width.

Enter the two dimensions and the calculator returns the area immediately. If you also enter a cost per square yard, it computes the total project cost; enter a total cost instead and it works back to the cost per square yard.

Unit conversions

Because a yard is 3 feet, a square yard is 9 square feet:

1 yd2=3 ft×3 ft=9 ft21 \ \text{yd}^2 = 3 \ \text{ft} \times 3 \ \text{ft} = 9 \ \text{ft}^2

A few other handy conversions to square yards:

1 m21.196 yd21 \ \text{m}^2 \approx 1.196 \ \text{yd}^2 1 ft2=19 yd20.1111 yd21 \ \text{ft}^2 = \frac{1}{9} \ \text{yd}^2 \approx 0.1111 \ \text{yd}^2 1 in2=11296 yd20.000772 yd21 \ \text{in}^2 = \frac{1}{1296} \ \text{yd}^2 \approx 0.000772 \ \text{yd}^2

Examples

Example 1: a room in yards

A floor that is 10 yd long and 5 yd wide has an area of:

A=10×5=50 yd2A = 10 \times 5 = 50 \ \text{yd}^2

Example 2: dimensions given in feet

A patio measured at 9 ft by 9 ft is 81 ft². Converting to square yards:

A=819=9 yd2A = \frac{81}{9} = 9 \ \text{yd}^2

Example 3: estimating material cost

For the 50 yd² floor in Example 1, with carpet priced at $20 per square yard, the total cost is:

50×20=1000 dollars50 \times 20 = 1000 \ \text{dollars}

Practical notes

  • For an L-shaped or irregular area, split it into rectangles, find each one’s square yards, and add them together.
  • Always order a little extra material (typically 5–10%) to cover cuts, waste, and pattern matching.
  • The cost feature works both ways: enter a price per square yard to get the total, or enter the total to back-solve the price per square yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in a square yard?

There are 9 square feet in one square yard, because a yard equals 3 feet and 3×3=93 \times 3 = 9.

How do I convert square feet to square yards?

Divide the number of square feet by 9. For example, 81 ft² is 81/9=981 / 9 = 9 yd².

How do I convert square metres to square yards?

Multiply square metres by about 1.196. For instance, 10 m² is roughly 10×1.196=11.9610 \times 1.196 = 11.96 yd².

Can I use this calculator for flooring or carpet?

Yes. Enter the room’s length and width, read the area in square yards, then add a cost per square yard to estimate the material cost. For mixed shapes, also try the square footage calculator.
