What is a liters to pints converter?

A liters to pints converter is an online tool that translates a volume given in liters (l) into its equivalent in pints (pt), and back again. It connects the metric system, which measures liquids in liters, with the customary systems still used in the United States and the United Kingdom, where the pint is a familiar unit for milk, beer, and cooking. Because a “pint” is not a single fixed amount, the converter lets you choose between US liquid pints, UK (imperial) pints, and US dry pints so the answer matches the context you are working in.

How does the converter work?

The converter has two linked fields. Type a number into the liters field and the matching pint value appears instantly; type into the pints field and the liter value is calculated in reverse. Each field also has a unit selector, so you can switch the liters side between milliliters, liters, and centiliters, and the pints side between US, UK/imperial, and US dry pints. Whenever you change a unit or a number, only the value you did not edit is recalculated, so your input is preserved.

Formula for conversion

The three pint definitions differ in size, so each has its own factor. One liter equals 1000 cubic centimeters, and the conversions are:

For liters to US liquid pints: pt (US)=liters×2.113376\text{pt (US)} = \text{liters} \times 2.113376

For US liquid pints to liters: liters=pt (US)×0.473176\text{liters} = \text{pt (US)} \times 0.473176

For liters to UK (imperial) pints: pt (UK)=liters×1.759754\text{pt (UK)} = \text{liters} \times 1.759754

For liters to US dry pints: pt (dry)=liters×1.816166\text{pt (dry)} = \text{liters} \times 1.816166

Examples

Example 1: One liter to US pints

A recipe lists a quantity in liters but you measure with US pint cups. Converting 1 liter to US liquid pints:

1 l×2.113376=2.113376 pt (US)1 \text{ l} \times 2.113376 = 2.113376 \text{ pt (US)}

Example 2: US pints back to liters

You have 1 US liquid pint of stock and want the metric amount. Converting in reverse:

1 pt (US)×0.473176=0.473176 l1 \text{ pt (US)} \times 0.473176 = 0.473176 \text{ l}

Example 3: Two liters of liquid

Scaling up a batch to 2 liters and reading it in US pints:

2 l×2.113376=4.226752 pt (US)2 \text{ l} \times 2.113376 = 4.226752 \text{ pt (US)}

Example 4: One liter to UK (imperial) pints

A British drink is served by the imperial pint. Converting 1 liter to UK pints:

1 l×1.759754=1.759754 pt (UK)1 \text{ l} \times 1.759754 = 1.759754 \text{ pt (UK)}

Notes

  • Always pick the correct pint type. A US liquid pint is about 473 ml, a UK/imperial pint is about 568 ml, and a US dry pint is about 551 ml, so the same number of pints can mean noticeably different volumes.
  • For most cooking and beverage uses, the US liquid pint is the default. Use the UK/imperial pint for British measurements and the US dry pint mainly for produce such as berries.
  • Liters and milliliters are decimal-friendly, so the converter handles fractional inputs without rounding errors in the underlying calculation.

Frequently asked questions

How many pints are in a liter?

One liter equals about 2.113376 US liquid pints, 1.759754 UK (imperial) pints, or 1.816166 US dry pints. The exact figure depends on which pint definition you select.

How many liters are in a US pint?

One US liquid pint is approximately 0.473176 liters, or about 473 milliliters. To convert several pints, multiply the number of pints by 0.473176.

Why are US and UK pints different sizes?

The two systems defined the pint separately. The US liquid pint is based on 16 US fluid ounces (about 473 ml), while the UK imperial pint is based on 20 imperial fluid ounces (about 568 ml), making the imperial pint roughly 20% larger.

What is a US dry pint used for?

The US dry pint measures dry goods such as berries and other produce rather than liquids. It is slightly larger than the US liquid pint, at about 0.551 liters, and one liter equals about 1.816166 US dry pints.

Can the converter handle milliliters?

Yes. The liters field includes a unit selector for milliliters and centiliters, so you can enter 500 ml and read the result directly in pints. If you work mostly in cups, you can also try our ml to cups converter.

How do I convert pints back to liters?

Switch your number into the pints field, choose the pint type, and the liters value updates automatically. Alternatively, multiply US pints by 0.473176, UK pints by 0.568261, or US dry pints by 0.550610 to get liters.
