What is a lot size to acres calculator?

A lot size to acres calculator turns a parcel of land’s dimensions into acres. You can describe the lot in two ways: enter its length and width (in any unit), or type the total area straight in as square feet. Either way, the calculator returns the size in acres — the unit most often used to advertise and value land in the United States.

The acre is a unit of area in the imperial and US customary systems. One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet, or roughly 4,046.86 square meters. Because real estate listings usually quote a lot by its frontage and depth, being able to fold those two numbers into a single acreage figure is one of the handiest land-measurement conversions there is.

How does the calculator work?

The calculator accepts two kinds of input. If you fill in the length and width, it multiplies them to get the lot’s area and converts that to acres. Internally each dimension is converted to meters, the two are multiplied to give an area in square meters, and that area is divided by 4,046.8564224 m² (one acre). This lets you mix units — for example, length in yards and width in feet — and still get the right answer.

If instead you already know the lot’s area, you can type it directly into the square-feet field. A direct square-feet entry takes priority: when it is filled, the calculator divides it by 43,560 and ignores the length and width. This is convenient when a survey or deed already states the lot area and you just want it in acres.

If you supply only one dimension and no square-feet value, the calculator shows no result, because both the length and the width are needed to define an area.

Lot size to acres formula

When you know the lot’s area in square feet, the conversion is a single division, since one acre is exactly 43,560 square feet:

Acres=Areaft243560\text{Acres} = \frac{\text{Area}_{\text{ft}^2}}{43560}

When you start from length and width measured in feet, multiply them first to get the area:

Acres=Lengthft×Widthft43560\text{Acres} = \frac{\text{Length}_{\text{ft}} \times \text{Width}_{\text{ft}}}{43560}

Working in meters instead, where one acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters:

Acres=Lengthm×Widthm4046.8564224\text{Acres} = \frac{\text{Length}_{\text{m}} \times \text{Width}_{\text{m}}}{4046.8564224}

Worked examples

The following examples reuse the same numbers as the calculator’s test fixtures.

Example 1: A 660 ft × 660 ft lot

A square lot that is 660 feet on each side covers:

Acres=660×66043560=10\text{Acres} = \frac{660 \times 660}{43560} = 10

So this lot is exactly 10 acres.

Example 2: A lot of 87,120 square feet

If a survey states the lot area directly, divide by 43,560:

Acres=8712043560=2\text{Acres} = \frac{87120}{43560} = 2

That lot is exactly 2 acres.

Example 3: A 100 m × 100 m plot

Working in meters, a square plot 100 meters on each side covers:

Acres=100×1004046.8564224=2.47105\text{Acres} = \frac{100 \times 100}{4046.8564224} = 2.47105

That is about 2.47105 acres — the same factor that relates one hectare to acres, since 100 m × 100 m is exactly one hectare.

Practical applications

Lot-to-acre conversion underpins land valuation, real estate listings, and property taxes: a building lot, paddock, or parcel is far easier to compare and price once its frontage and depth are turned into acres. Surveyors, farmers, and developers all lean on the figure when planning fences, crops, irrigation, or subdivision.

The calculator is also useful for sanity-checking a listing. If an advertisement quotes both the dimensions and an acreage, you can confirm the numbers agree before signing anything. To start from an existing area instead, see the acreage calculator for length-and-width input, or convert straight between units with the acres to square feet converter and the square feet to acres converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in an acre?

One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet.

How do I convert lot size to acres?

If you know the area in square feet, divide it by 43,560. If you know the length and width in feet, multiply them first to get the area, then divide by 43,560. For example, a 660 ft × 660 ft lot is 435,600 ft², and 435,600 ÷ 43,560 = 10 acres.

How big is one acre in square meters?

One acre equals exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters, often rounded to about 4,046.86 m².

Can I mix units for length and width?

Yes. The calculator converts each measurement to a common unit internally, so you can enter the length in yards and the width in feet and still get a correct result in acres.

What if I already know the area in square feet?

Type it straight into the square-feet field. A direct square-feet entry takes priority, so the calculator divides it by 43,560 and ignores the length and width.
