What are micrograms, milligrams and grams?

These three units all belong to the metric system, where every step up or down is a clean power of ten. That makes them ideal for the very small quantities found in medicine, nutrition, and laboratory work, where a mistake of a single decimal place can matter a great deal.

Micrograms (mcg or µg)

A microgram is one millionth of a gram and one thousandth of a milligram. It is the unit you most often see on vitamin labels and prescription dosages — folate, vitamin B12, and many hormones are measured in micrograms. The symbol “µg” is technically correct, but health professionals frequently write “mcg” to avoid the Greek letter “µ” being misread by hand.

Milligrams (mg)

A milligram is one thousandth of a gram. It is the workhorse unit of pharmacy: tablet strengths, caffeine content, and most over-the-counter dosages are quoted in milligrams. One milligram contains exactly 1,000 micrograms.

Grams (g)

A gram is the familiar base unit for small everyday masses. A gram holds 1,000 milligrams or 1,000,000 micrograms. Food labels, postage, and kitchen scales all work in grams.

How does the calculator work?

The converter keeps three linked fields — micrograms, milligrams, and grams. Type a value into any one of them and the other two update instantly. Because the units differ only by factors of a thousand, the math is pure multiplication and division by powers of ten, so the results are exact rather than rounded approximations.

Conversion formulas

To move from a smaller unit to a larger one, divide; to move from a larger unit to a smaller one, multiply.

Milligrams=Micrograms1000\text{Milligrams} = \frac{\text{Micrograms}}{1000} Grams=Micrograms1,000,000\text{Grams} = \frac{\text{Micrograms}}{1{,}000{,}000} Micrograms=Milligrams×1000\text{Micrograms} = \text{Milligrams} \times 1000 Micrograms=Grams×1,000,000\text{Micrograms} = \text{Grams} \times 1{,}000{,}000

Worked examples

Example 1: Convert 1000 mcg to milligrams and grams

Milligrams=10001000=1\text{Milligrams} = \frac{1000}{1000} = 1 Grams=10001,000,000=0.001\text{Grams} = \frac{1000}{1{,}000{,}000} = 0.001

So 1,000 mcg equals 1 mg, which is 0.001 g.

Example 2: Convert 500 mcg to milligrams

Milligrams=5001000=0.5\text{Milligrams} = \frac{500}{1000} = 0.5

A common supplement dose of 500 mcg is therefore exactly half a milligram.

Example 3: Convert 2 mg to micrograms and grams

Micrograms=2×1000=2000\text{Micrograms} = 2 \times 1000 = 2000 Grams=21000=0.002\text{Grams} = \frac{2}{1000} = 0.002

Thus 2 mg equals 2,000 mcg, or 0.002 g.

Practical notes

  • Always double-check whether a label uses “mcg” or “mg” before measuring a dose — the two differ by a factor of 1,000, and confusing them is a frequent source of medication errors.
  • For mental conversions, remember the simple chain: 1 g = 1,000 mg = 1,000,000 mcg. Each arrow to the right multiplies by 1,000.
  • When you need to step beyond these three units, see our pounds to grams converter or the ounces to grams converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many micrograms are in a milligram?

There are exactly 1,000 micrograms in one milligram. To convert milligrams to micrograms, multiply by 1,000.

How many micrograms are in a gram?

There are 1,000,000 micrograms in one gram, because a gram holds 1,000 milligrams and each milligram holds 1,000 micrograms.

Is mcg the same as µg?

Yes. Both abbreviations mean the same unit, the microgram. “mcg” is preferred in healthcare to avoid handwriting the Greek letter “µ”, which can be misread.

How do I convert mg to g?

Divide the number of milligrams by 1,000. For example, 2 mg becomes 0.002 g.

Why are these conversions exact?

Because micrograms, milligrams, and grams differ only by powers of ten, there is no rounding involved — every conversion is a clean multiplication or division by 1,000 or 1,000,000.
