What is a metric tons to tons converter?

A metric tons to tons converter is an online tool that turns a mass expressed in metric tons into its equivalent in US (short) tons, and back again. The two units share a name but describe different quantities: the metric ton (also written tonne, symbol t) is an SI-based unit equal to exactly 1,000 kilograms, while the US ton (the short ton) is a customary unit equal to 2,000 pounds. Because the gap between them is large enough to matter in shipping, manufacturing, and trade, a quick and reliable conversion keeps invoices, load limits, and specifications honest.

Metric tons and US tons

The confusion around the word “ton” is worth untangling:

  • Metric ton (tonne, t) — exactly 1,000 kg, used almost everywhere outside the United States and in international commerce.
  • US ton (short ton) — 2,000 lb, the default “ton” in the United States. One pound is exactly 453.59237 g, so a US ton is 907,184.74 g, or about 0.90718474 metric tons.
  • Long ton (Imperial ton) — 2,240 lb, an older British unit not used by this converter.

This tool converts between the metric ton and the US short ton. It also lets you read either side in pounds (lb), ounces (oz), or grams (g) when that is more convenient.

How does the converter work?

The converter is bidirectional: type a number into either field and the other side updates instantly. Both units are first expressed in a common base (grams), so the math reduces to a single multiplication. Because 1 metric ton = 1,000,000 g and 1 US ton = 907,184.74 g, the ratio between them is fixed and exact.

Formula for conversion

To go from metric tons to US tons, divide by the gram-weight of a US ton (or, equivalently, multiply by the constant below):

US tons=metric tons×1,000,000907,184.74=metric tons×1.1023113\text{US tons} = \text{metric tons} \times \frac{1{,}000{,}000}{907{,}184.74} = \text{metric tons} \times 1.1023113

To go the other way, from US tons to metric tons:

metric tons=US tons×907,184.741,000,000=US tons×0.90718474\text{metric tons} = \text{US tons} \times \frac{907{,}184.74}{1{,}000{,}000} = \text{US tons} \times 0.90718474

Conversion table

The table lists common metric-ton values with their US-ton equivalents (rounded to four decimals) and the corresponding mass in pounds:

Examples

Example 1: One metric ton to US tons

Convert a single metric ton to US tons by multiplying by the conversion factor:

1 t×1.1023113=1.1023113 US tons1 \text{ t} \times 1.1023113 = 1.1023113 \text{ US tons}

So one metric ton is just over one and a tenth US tons.

Example 2: US tons back to metric tons

A shipment is billed as 1 US ton. To express it in metric tons:

1 US ton×0.90718474=0.90718474 metric tons1 \text{ US ton} \times 0.90718474 = 0.90718474 \text{ metric tons}

A US ton is a little lighter than a metric ton.

Example 3: A 5-metric-ton load

A crane is rated by a European supplier at 5 metric tons. To check that against a US-ton rating:

5 t×1.1023113=5.5115566 US tons5 \text{ t} \times 1.1023113 = 5.5115566 \text{ US tons}

Example 4: Reading metric tons in pounds

Sometimes it helps to drop down to pounds. One metric ton equals:

1 t=1,000,000 g÷453.59237 g/lb=2204.6226 lb1 \text{ t} = 1{,}000{,}000 \text{ g} \div 453.59237 \text{ g/lb} = 2204.6226 \text{ lb}

Notes

  • The metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kg by definition; the US ton is 2,000 lb. They differ by about 10%, so they are not interchangeable.
  • Do not confuse the US (short) ton with the long ton of 2,240 lb used historically in the UK and the Commonwealth.
  • For very large quantities, such as cargo or industrial output, even a 10% difference adds up quickly — always confirm which “ton” a figure refers to.
  • This converter handles decimal inputs, so fractional tonnages convert just as precisely as whole numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How many US tons are in one metric ton?

One metric ton equals about 1.1023113 US tons. Multiply any number of metric tons by 1.1023113 to get US tons.

How many metric tons are in one US ton?

One US ton equals about 0.90718474 metric tons. Multiply US tons by 0.90718474 to convert to metric tons.

Why is a metric ton heavier than a US ton?

A metric ton is 1,000 kg (about 2,204.62 lb), while a US ton is only 2,000 lb. The metric ton is therefore roughly 10% heavier.

Is a “tonne” the same as a metric ton?

Yes. “Tonne” is the spelling used internationally for the metric ton, symbol t. Both mean exactly 1,000 kilograms.

What is the difference between a US ton and a long ton?

A US (short) ton is 2,000 lb. A long ton, used historically in Britain, is 2,240 lb. This converter uses the US short ton.

How do I convert 100 metric tons to US tons?

Multiply 100 by 1.1023113, which gives 110.23113 US tons.
