What is a pints to pounds conversion?

A pints to pounds converter changes a volume in US pints into a weight in pounds. A pint measures the space a liquid fills, while a pound measures its mass, so the bridge between them is the substance’s density. A pint of water is lighter than a pint of honey and heavier than a pint of oil.

Choose a product—water, milk, beer, oil, honey and more—or type in a custom density, and the calculator uses the matching value. It also works in reverse, so you can enter pounds to find pints.

How does it work?

Weight equals volume times density. There are 8 US pints in a US gallon, so the tool converts your pints to gallons (1 pint = 0.125 gallon), then multiplies by the density stored in pounds per US gallon:

Weight (lb)=Volume (pt)×0.125×ρlb/gal\text{Weight (lb)} = \text{Volume (pt)} \times 0.125 \times \rho_{\text{lb/gal}}

Water has a density of about 8.34 lb/gal, so a single US pint of water weighs roughly 1.043 pounds—close to the familiar brewing rule that “a pint’s a pound”.

Formula

Weight (lb)=Volume (pt)×ρlb/gal8\text{Weight (lb)} = \text{Volume (pt)} \times \frac{\rho_{\text{lb/gal}}}{8}

Worked examples

Example 1: One US pint of water

Weight=1×0.125×8.341.043 lb\text{Weight} = 1 \times 0.125 \times 8.34 \approx 1.043 \text{ lb}

Example 2: Two US pints of water

Weight=2×0.125×8.342.086 lb\text{Weight} = 2 \times 0.125 \times 8.34 \approx 2.086 \text{ lb}

Notes

These figures use the US pint of 473.176 mL. The imperial (UK) pint is larger at 568.261 mL, so a UK pint of water weighs about 1.25 lb, which is where the British “a pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter” saying comes from. Density shifts a little with temperature and composition, so treat the results as close estimates. For a related volume conversion, see the gallons to pounds converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pounds is a pint of water?

About 1.043 pounds for a US pint, and roughly 1.25 pounds for the larger imperial pint.

Does “a pint’s a pound” hold exactly?

It is a handy approximation for US pints of water; the true figure is about 1.04 pounds, so it is slightly over a pound.

Can I convert pounds back to pints?

Yes. Enter a weight in pounds and the converter returns the volume in pints for the selected product.
