What is a square inches calculator?

A square inches calculator finds the area of a rectangle in square inches (in²) from its two side lengths. You enter a length and a width, and the calculator multiplies them to return the area. Square inches are a convenient unit for small flat surfaces such as tiles, phone screens, photo prints, fabric pieces, and labels, where square feet would give awkwardly small decimals.

The calculator defaults to inches for the length and width and to square inches for the area, but every field has a unit selector, so you can mix units (for example, length in feet and width in inches) and read the result in square feet, square yards, square centimeters, square meters, or square millimeters as well.

How does the calculator work?

The area of a rectangle is the product of its two sides. With length $a$ and width $b$, the area $A$ is:

$A = a \times b$

When both sides are in inches, the area comes out directly in square inches. Internally the calculator converts both side lengths to meters, multiplies them, and then converts the resulting area into whatever unit you have selected for the output, so unit mixing is always handled correctly.

Unit conversions

Because area scales with the square of the length ratio, the conversion factors for square units are the squares of the linear ones:

Worked examples

Example 1: 12 in × 12 in

A square tile that is 12 inches on each side:

$A = 12 \times 12 = 144 \text{ in}^2$

That is exactly one square foot, since $144 \text{ in}^2 = 1 \text{ ft}^2$.

Example 2: 10 in × 6 in

A rectangular label 10 inches long and 6 inches wide:

$A = 10 \times 6 = 60 \text{ in}^2$

Example 3: 1 in × 1 in

The smallest building block, a one-inch square:

$A = 1 \times 1 = 1 \text{ in}^2$

Practical notes

• For paint, tiling, or material estimates, work out the area first in square inches, then convert to square feet by dividing by 144 if you are buying by the square foot.
• For non-rectangular shapes, split the surface into rectangles, find each area, and add them together.
