What is a days since calculator?

A days since calculator tells you how many whole days have elapsed from a chosen past date up to the current day. You pick the earlier date, and the tool measures the gap between that date and today, updating automatically as time passes.

This answers everyday questions such as “How many days since my last workout?”, “How long has it been since the project launched?”, or “How many days have passed since the start of the year?”. Because the end point is always today, the count grows by one each day without any extra input from you.

How does the calculator work?

You provide a single value:

  • a past date — the day you want to measure from.

The calculator subtracts that date from today’s date and reports the result as a whole number of days. If the field is left empty, no result is shown. If you happen to pick today’s date, the answer is 0, and a future date would produce a negative number (today has not yet reached it).

Formula

The number of days that have passed is the difference between today and the chosen date:

Days Since=TodayPast Date\text{Days Since} = \text{Today} - \text{Past Date}

The result is measured in whole days, so partial days are not counted — only complete 24-hour periods between the two dates contribute to the total.

Worked example

Suppose the past date is January 1, 2020. The calculator computes the difference between today and that date:

Days Since=TodayJanuary 1, 2020\text{Days Since} = \text{Today} - \text{January 1, 2020}

Because the result is relative to the current day, the count keeps increasing over time. For instance, if today were exactly five years later (January 1, 2025), the calculator would report:

Days Since=5×365+1=1826 days\text{Days Since} = 5 \times 365 + 1 = 1826 \text{ days}

The extra day comes from the leap year that falls within the span. Run the tool yourself to see the live count for any starting date.

Practical notes

  • The end date is always today, so the value refreshes on its own from one day to the next.
  • Leap years are handled automatically, so spans that cross February 29 include the extra day.
  • Choosing today’s date returns 0, and choosing a future date returns a negative number, signalling that the date has not yet arrived.
  • To measure the gap between two fixed dates instead of “since today”, use the days between dates calculator at https://www.mega-calculator.com/everyday-life/days-between-dates/, or count down to an upcoming date with the days until calculator.
