What is a California sales tax calculator?

A California sales tax calculator is a free online tool that turns a pre-tax price into the tax you owe and the final amount you pay at the register. You enter the pre-tax amount and the sales tax rate that applies to your purchase, and the calculator returns the sales tax in dollars and the total price. It is handy for shoppers checking a receipt, freelancers quoting a client, and small businesses that need to add tax to an invoice.

California has a statewide base sales tax rate of 7.25%, which is why that value is pre-filled. Many cities and counties add district taxes on top of the base rate, so the combined rate at a specific location is often higher — commonly between 7.25% and 10.75%. Because the rate you actually pay depends on where the sale takes place, the calculator lets you override the default with the exact rate for your city.

How does it work?

The tool takes two numbers: the pre-tax amount and the sales tax rate expressed as a percentage. It multiplies the amount by the rate divided by 100 to get the tax, then adds that tax back to the original amount to get the total. Because the sales tax rate is a percentage rather than a physical measurement, no unit conversion is involved — you just type the rate for your location.

Formula

The sales tax and total price are calculated as follows:

Sales tax=Amount×Rate100\text{Sales tax} = \text{Amount} \times \frac{\text{Rate}}{100}

Total price=Amount+Sales tax\text{Total price} = \text{Amount} + \text{Sales tax}

Worked example

Suppose you buy an item with a pre-tax price of $100 at the statewide base rate of 7.25%:

Sales tax=100×7.25100=7.25\text{Sales tax} = 100 \times \frac{7.25}{100} = 7.25

Total price=100+7.25=107.25\text{Total price} = 100 + 7.25 = 107.25

So the sales tax is $7.25 and the total you pay is $107.25.

For a $250 purchase in a district where the combined rate is 8.5%:

Sales tax=250×8.5100=21.25\text{Sales tax} = 250 \times \frac{8.5}{100} = 21.25

Total price=250+21.25=271.25\text{Total price} = 250 + 21.25 = 271.25

The tax is $21.25 and the total price is $271.25.

Notes

The 7.25% default is California’s statewide minimum. Always confirm the combined rate for the exact address of the sale, since local district taxes can push it well above the base. Sales tax also applies only to taxable goods and some services — groceries and prescription medicine, for instance, are generally exempt. If you are working the other way around and already know the final price, you can reverse the math or use a discount calculator to strip a percentage back out of a total.

FAQ

What is the sales tax rate in California?

The statewide base rate is 7.25%. Local district taxes are added on top, so the combined rate you pay ranges roughly from 7.25% up to about 10.75% depending on the city and county.

Is the pre-tax amount the same as the shelf price?

In the United States, shelf prices are usually shown before tax, so the amount on the tag is typically the pre-tax amount. Tax is added at checkout, which is exactly what this calculator shows.

Does this calculator work for other states?

Yes. Although the default rate is California’s 7.25%, you can enter any percentage, so the same tool works for any state or local sales tax rate.
