What is a percent to decimal calculator?

A percent to decimal calculator is a free online tool that converts a percentage into its equivalent decimal value, and works the other way around too. Percentages are convenient for reading and comparing values, but most arithmetic - multiplying a price by a discount, applying an interest rate, or scaling a measurement - is easier when the percentage is expressed as a plain decimal. This calculator removes the manual step: enter a percentage and read the decimal instantly, or enter a decimal and read the percentage.

The conversion is bidirectional. Editing the percentage field updates the decimal field, and editing the decimal field updates the percentage field, so you can use whichever direction you need without switching tools.

How does the calculator work?

A percentage is simply a fraction out of 100. The word “percent” literally means “per hundred”, so a percentage already carries an implied division by 100. To turn it into a decimal you make that division explicit; to go back, you reverse it by multiplying.

To convert a percentage to a decimal, divide it by 100 (equivalently, move the decimal point two places to the left):

Decimal=Percentage100\text{Decimal} = \frac{\text{Percentage}}{100}

To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply it by 100 (move the decimal point two places to the right):

Percentage=Decimal×100\text{Percentage} = \text{Decimal} \times 100

The two operations are exact inverses, so converting in one direction and back always returns the original number.

Worked examples

  1. Example 1: Convert 50% to a decimal.

    50100=0.5\frac{50}{100} = 0.5

    So 50% expressed as a decimal is 0.5.

  2. Example 2: Convert 7.5% to a decimal.

    7.5100=0.075\frac{7.5}{100} = 0.075

    So 7.5% expressed as a decimal is 0.075.

  3. Example 3: Convert the decimal 0.25 to a percentage.

    0.25×100=25%0.25 \times 100 = 25\%

    So 0.25 expressed as a percentage is 25%.

  4. Example 4: Convert the decimal 1 to a percentage.

    1×100=100%1 \times 100 = 100\%

    So a decimal value of 1 corresponds to 100%, the whole of something.

Practical notes

  • A quick mental shortcut: to go from percent to decimal, shift the decimal point two places left (45%0.4545\% \to 0.45); to go the other way, shift it two places right (0.4545%0.45 \to 45\%).
  • Decimals above 1 are perfectly valid and represent percentages greater than 100% - for instance, 1.5 is 150%.
  • Decimal results here are shown to four places, which is enough precision for everyday financial and statistical work.
  • This direction of conversion is especially handy in spreadsheets and code, where rates must be stored as decimals before being multiplied.

FAQs

How do I convert a percent to a decimal by hand?

Divide the percentage by 100, or equivalently move the decimal point two places to the left. For example, 8% becomes 0.08.

What is 100% as a decimal?

100% as a decimal is 1, because dividing 100 by 100 gives 1. It represents a complete whole.

Can a percentage be greater than 100%?

Yes. Any percentage above 100% produces a decimal greater than 1. For example, 250% converts to 2.5.

How do I convert a decimal back to a percent?

Multiply the decimal by 100 and add a percent sign, or move the decimal point two places to the right. For example, 0.075 becomes 7.5%.
