What is a square meters calculator?

A square meters calculator works out the area of a rectangular space when you know its length and width, both measured in meters. The result is expressed in square meters (m²), the standard metric unit of area. This is handy for sizing flooring, paint, turf, tiles, or any project where you need to know how much surface a rectangle covers.

Formula

For a rectangle with length ll and width ww in meters, the area AA in square meters is:

A=l×wA = l \times w

How to use

  1. Enter the length of the space in meters.
  2. Enter the width of the space in meters.
  3. The area in square meters updates automatically once both values are present.

Measure both dimensions in the same unit (meters) so the result comes out in square meters. If your measurements are in centimeters, divide by 100 first.

Worked example

Suppose a room is 5 meters long and 4 meters wide:

A=5×4=20m2A = 5 \times 4 = 20 \, \text{m}^2

So the room covers 20 square meters.

A second example: a space that is 3.5 meters long and 2 meters wide gives:

A=3.5×2=7m2A = 3.5 \times 2 = 7 \, \text{m}^2

That is 7 square meters.

FAQ

How do I convert square meters to square feet?

Multiply the area in square meters by 10.7639. For instance, 20 m² is about 215.28 square feet.

What if my room is not a perfect rectangle?

Split the space into rectangular sections, calculate the area of each section separately, and add the results together to get the total area.
